Rafał Wilk

I am a paralympic cyclist, a winner of the World Champion and Paralympic Champion titles.
I’ve been a speedway rider, skier, cyclist and then… hand cyclist. I started racing on speedways in the early 1990s in Stal Rzeszów and I ended it in the Krosno Motorcycle Association. My career was put to a brutal end in Krosno on 3rd May 2006, after a speedway accident during a champion league meeting with GTŻ Grudziądz. After hitting the fence at the last turn before the finish line I got injured, which resulted in a broken spine and severed spinal cord in the lumbar area.

I didn’t quit sports. After half a year of recovery I showed up on the slope as a skier on a monoski. I keep skiing to this day. I also haven’t lost the touch with speedway racing. For two years I was a coach at STAL Rzeszów, then for two years from 2010 to 2011 a coach at Motor Lublin.

In 2010 I returned to active participation in sports. I focused on perfecting cycling skills. And that was the right choice.

At first I learned from others, from a legend of the Polish hand cycling – Zbigniew Wandachowicz. Over time, I reached his level. In 2011 I participated for the first time in the Para-Cycling World Championship in Denmark. I took the 6th place in time trial and 7th in the road race. During the Olympic season I won the World Cup final classification. I won both starts at my first Paralympics in London 2012 – time trial and unified start racing. After the Olympics, I spoke on behalf of athletes to the government representatives: “It’s nice that everyone is interested in us these days. It is really cool. It’s too bad, though, that this interest wasn’t there when we were going to London, when we actually needed it most”.
In a pool by “Przegląd Sportowy” and Telewizja Polska I was chosen for the best handicapped athlete of 2012. In 2013 I won the World Cup again. During the world championship in the Canadian province of Quebeck I took the first place twice – in a road race and in a time trial. In 2014 I became the World Champion for the third time in Greenvill, USA, in an individual time trial. The now-passing 2015 is special to me – I won a double World Championship in Nottwill, Switzerland, I won at the general classification of the World Cup and European Cup and for the forth consecutive time in the UCI ranking.

On 1st December I started preparing for the 2016 season.
This is an Olympic year, which is very important for every athlete. I got qualified for the Rio Paralympics 2016, but on top of great dedication, exhausting training, reaching the dream goal also requires financial support.

Numerous groupings, physical examinations and equipment entail high costs which might go up to 50 thousand zloties. The demand for equipment covers bicycle parts, as in bearings, gears and wheels. An important element in the training cycle are groupings and the ability to train in conditions optimal for it, in a definitely warmer climate. During the preparations I’m also planning mountain camping and numerous trips related directly to the Olympics.

The resources and financial support from you ensure that I can develop and comfortably prepare for the Olympic year. On my part, I can assure that I will do my best when fighting to uphold the gold medals from London. I also promise information and promotion of the sponsoring brand on a personal website, social networks and in media.
